Over the next few days, we dealt with police and coroners and social services and attorneys. And in the end, Donny was named as the primary and only living parent, and he appointed me as a legal guardian.

We had a kid together. A child that was ours through blood—mine and Donny’s.

It was hard to wrap my head around at first, but Donny took care of the details and even managed to get everything that a couple of inexperienced guys might need to raise an infant.

Apparently, the lady at the local baby boutique loaded him up with two of everything in her store. And he was happy to jump right into the role. I think there were some unresolved feelings of guilt that he was trying to repress, but since he wasn’t ready to talk about them, I didn’t push the topic.

I was dealing with my own repressed grief and guilt from letting the relationship with my sister dwindle over nothing and never having the chance to repair it. So we just pretended to be a happy little family while my heat cleared up.

And when I was able to leave. We had to figure out what that actually meant.

I walked out of the bathroom and saw Donny changing a diaper. My heart skipped a beat, and I felt something shift inside me that I couldn’t describe. We’d had sex a few more times after Ollie arrived, but mostly because I woke up in a cold sweat and couldn’t go back to sleep without his knot. But now that I could think clearly, I realized there was actual chemistry between us. “So, I think the scent is gone now.”

Donny finished buttoning up Ollie’s pajamas then put him on his shoulder. “Yeah, I think you’re right. I haven’t noticed it for almost a day.”

I slipped my hands into my pockets. Donny went to my house and picked up some clothes for me, so at least I had stuff that fit. But I kinda missed swimming around in his sweats. They smelled like him. Whether they were clean out of the dryer or sweaty after he’d been working in the shop, I loved the way he smelled. And being enveloped in that scent made me feel at home. “So, I guess I should head home.”

His head swung toward me, and I could see the hurt written across his face. “You’re leaving?”

I shrugged, not entirely sure what I wanted. “I think I have to. I mean, I can’t stay here forever.”

He opened and closed his mouth a few times but nothing came out. Then he cleared his throat and nodded. “Yeah, I get it. You have a life. I do too.” He looked around the room and then at the baby in his arms. “I’m gonna probably hire a nanny for when I’m at work, so if you want to be here for the interviews, I can let you know.”

I nodded and then reconsidered. “Actually, I can work at home whenever I want.”

Donny held my gaze with an intensity that I’d only seen in the bedroom.
